What DPI Should You Use for Print on Demand?

Understand DPI, pixels and physical print size, with worked examples and a practical way to check a supplier template.

DPI is often treated as a magic quality setting. It is more useful when connected to two other facts: the number of pixels in the image and the physical size of the print. Without those, a DPI label tells only part of the story.

Distinguish pixels from print density An image has a width and height measured in pixels. Pixels per inch, or PPI, describes how densely those pixels are placed across a physical print. People often use DPI conversationally for this image setting, although printer dots and image pixels are not identical concepts.

The calculation is straightforward: physical inches equal pixels divided by PPI. A 3000-pixel-wide image at 300 PPI corresponds to 10 inches. At 150 PPI, those same pixels cover 20 inches. The file has not gained detail; its information is spread over a different area.

Follow the actual product requirement There is no single resolution setting for every production method. Check the supplier's current file guidelines for the chosen product. For example, [Printful's DTG file guidance](https://www.printful.com/creating-dtg-file) distinguishes requirements by product and advises checking each product's guidelines.

Do not infer a universal rule from the name Etsy, Shopify or Print on Demand. A store can sell goods made by different suppliers, each with its own templates and print methods. Record which template you are following.

Work through the size before exporting Suppose your intended artwork is 12 inches wide and your chosen target is 300 PPI. Multiply 12 by 300 to get 3600 pixels. If the artwork is 8 inches tall, the corresponding height is 2400 pixels.

Now compare those numbers with the source. A 3600 by 2400 source has the expected pixel count. A 900 by 600 source can be resized to those dimensions, but the additional pixels are interpolated. Fine letters and linework may still look weak when printed.

Know what metadata changes DPI metadata records an intended relationship between pixels and physical units. Some applications use it when placing an image into a document. Other workflows prioritize pixel dimensions or use their own placement settings.

Changing metadata from 72 to 300 without resizing does not sharpen the artwork. It changes the interpreted physical size. Increasing pixel dimensions is another operation, and even that cannot restore detail that was missing in the source. See the upscaling guide for this distinction.

Inspect more than the number - Confirm the source and export pixel dimensions. - Calculate the visible artwork's intended physical size. - Inspect lettering, thin strokes and gradients. - Check whether transparent padding makes the subject smaller than the canvas. - Review the supplier's upload preview and product-specific guidance.

A large file can still contain a blurry subject. Conversely, a small design used at a small physical size may be perfectly appropriate. Judge the actual use, not only a metadata field.

Make the calculation repeatable Use the [Print Size Calculator](/tools/print-size-calculator) to compare alternatives before exporting. Keep the selected dimensions and target density in your project notes so future variations use the same assumptions.

For important launches, inspect a physical sample where feasible. A numerical check can catch a resolution mismatch, but it cannot tell you exactly how ink, fabric texture or your chosen colors will look together.
