PNG and JPEG are both common image formats, but they solve different problems. The right choice depends on whether you need transparency, what kind of artwork you have and what the supplier accepts. The extension alone does not determine print quality.
Use PNG when transparency matters PNG can preserve an alpha channel, including partially transparent edge pixels. This makes it useful for a cutout that should show the garment color around the subject. It also uses lossless compression, so saving does not apply JPEG-style compression damage.
However, a PNG can still contain a white rectangle or a baked-in checkerboard. It can also contain a blurry source. Check the actual pixels and transparency instead of assuming the format has corrected those issues.
Understand where JPEG can fit JPEG is commonly used for opaque photographs and continuous-tone images. Its lossy compression can produce a smaller file, but it does not support transparency. A full rectangular composition may be suitable when the supplier accepts JPEG and the background is intentional.
Compression can be especially visible around lettering, hard outlines and high-contrast edges. Look for small blocks or ripples around those areas. Repeatedly saving a JPEG can compound damage, so export from the best master rather than editing a succession of compressed copies.
Separate format from dimensions A 500-pixel PNG does not become high resolution because it is lossless. A well-prepared JPEG can contain more real detail than a much smaller PNG. Compare the source, dimensions and intended print size alongside the format.
Use the DPI guide to calculate physical size. If the image lacks sufficient detail, changing the extension will not create it. Resizing and background removal are separate decisions as well.
Make the choice for a concrete design Consider a simple black slogan intended for a colored shirt. A transparent PNG helps preserve the space around the letters without an unwanted rectangular background. Carefully inspect the lettering and alpha edges before using it.
Now consider a rectangular landscape photograph intended for a full-bleed print. Transparency may not be necessary. Start with the supplier's accepted formats, export from a high-quality source and inspect any compression in gradients or fine detail.
Check conversion results - Open the exported file in a second viewer. - Confirm its width and height in pixels. - Place transparent artwork over contrasting colors. - Inspect text and edges for compression artifacts. - Compare the file with the supplier's current template.
Converting JPEG to PNG can prevent further lossy saves, but it preserves existing compression artifacts. Converting PNG to JPEG requires flattening transparency against a background color, so confirm that the chosen color is intentional.
Keep an export strategy Retain your editable source and make format-specific copies for each product. Keep a clean transparent cutout when useful, then create a separate canvas-sized version. This reduces the temptation to overwrite your only good copy during a quick conversion.
