A transparent PNG lets the product show through around your artwork. It is different from an image with a white background, and different again from a picture of a checkerboard. Getting that distinction right can prevent an unwanted rectangle from becoming part of the print.
Understand what transparency stores PNG can store an alpha channel: information about how opaque each pixel is. Fully transparent pixels reveal the surface underneath. Partially transparent pixels can create smoother edges or deliberate translucent effects.
JPEG does not support an alpha channel. Saving an opaque JPEG as PNG preserves the existing pixels; it does not know which ones you wanted to remove. Background removal is a separate operation that must happen before the transparent export.
Identify the background and the artwork Look closely before using an automatic remover. White eyes, lettering or highlights may belong to the subject. The white region outside the subject may be the background. Removing every white pixel globally can destroy both.
Edge-connected removal starts from the outer region and can help preserve enclosed areas. Global color removal affects matching colors throughout the picture. Choose based on the structure of your image, then inspect the result rather than assuming one setting works for everything.
Work from a conservative threshold Upload the source to the [Background Remover](/tools/background-remover). Begin with a modest threshold and examine the silhouette. Raise it gradually if a pale fringe remains, stopping when it starts to damage useful detail.
If the source has a busy background with colors shared by the subject, a color-based tool may not be enough. Use manual cleanup or a dedicated editor for those regions. Repeatedly increasing the threshold can create holes without solving the real separation problem.
Test the result on several backgrounds A cutout can look perfect on white and show a bright outline on black. It can also look clean on a checkerboard while containing stray semitransparent pixels. Inspect the same output on contrasting backgrounds.
- Use a dark background to reveal light fringes.
- Use a light background to reveal dark contamination.
- Look inside letters and between separated parts of the subject.
- Check around hair, fur and thin strokes.
- Zoom out to make sure the overall silhouette still feels natural.
Partially transparent edges are not automatically a defect. They can make a contour appear smooth. The question is whether they contain unwanted background color or remove too much of the subject.
Export and independently verify Download the cutout as PNG and reopen it in a viewer that displays transparency. Place it over a colored shape if necessary. If the checkerboard moves with the artwork, it was probably stored as image pixels rather than shown by the viewer.

Decide whether transparency suits the product A rectangular illustration or full-bleed photograph may intentionally include a background. Removing it can change the artwork's meaning or leave an awkward composition. Transparency is a design choice, not a universal requirement.
Review the supplier's product template and preview before publishing. The final question is not whether the file says PNG; it is whether the actual visible and transparent regions produce the design you intended.
